Stumbled across this..........not the most obvious choice for this music.......but the out of phase clean sound works really well!

  • I mean Rory Gallagher had a strat and he was Irish.... Therefore you can play Irish music on it.....  :s

I know you're having a laugh..........but Rory likely did play a bit of Trad on that Strat during his early showband years?.......and I think you can hear a trad influence in his composition and soloing.........so you accidentally make a good point! :-)

Gary Moore on the Irish Medley section of Thin Lizzy's 'Black Rose' - that sounds like a Strat and too twangy for a Les Paul

  • Not unusual at all to see strats and teles in a folk band bashing out jigs and reels, and possibly the most famous  traditional Irish rock solo whisky in a jar was played by Eric Bell on a strat

IIRC Gary learned traditional Irish music as a lad, the blues rock stuff came later, and would sit and twiddle on a traditional tune in his own time.

IMHO your playing style will always lean towards your influences. Tony McMahon, a well known accordionists, always sounds slightly like the tune would be if he were playing a set of uileann pipes. Not that surprising as he came from Clare and would have heard the uileann pipes played all his life.

  • I bought a Charvel Spectrum (superstrat) from a guy on eBay 10 years or so ago, and he told me that a guy in a local jazz band where he lived played a bright orange one, strung with flatwounds
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)

I did think of Richard Thompson when I first watched the clip.........he's another player who can make the Strat sound like the Pipes similar to what Rocker mentioned.......his bending technique is very Northumberland Pipes

Nice , more than a little Mark Knopfler vibe about that and there is something “lyrical” about that Strat tone that lends itself to that style for sure!
