Nothing wrong with quartz at that budget and also nothing wrong with high-accuracy quartz at a much higher budget, IMO. I rather fancy some of the quartz Grand Seikos, and they start about £2k. Actually, I wouldn't buy one of those... but I could see myself paying high hundreds for a really rare 70s Seiko, or a specially nice Omega, or an Oysterquartz.

Maybe take a look at Mondaine, the Helvetica line (or the standard stuff if you like the railway clock vibe). Quite respected name, pretty Bauhaus-y, nice 38mm size.

  • So many whizzes for @RaymondLin in this thread. I never really "got" the watch thing, but I do understand it. For me, I want one that keeps time and looks good, which I have.

Some people do want a watch to discuss over dinner. Ultimately, your phone or a smart watch will keep the time in every time zone to-the-second accurate forever, but you wouldn't catch me dead with an apple watch on my wrist (yet :)

I have a Graf Zeppelin Bauhaus and a Junkers watch, both keep excellent time and are sensibly priced. They are not automatic but they do them at extra cost, there are some great designs. I also have a Traser P6500 but that stopped working after two years of use, a new battery didn't do the job which is a shame as it's a great everyday watch. Check out the Graf Zeppelin range of watches, there are some seriously nice looking specimens! My dream watch would be a Longines, lovely watches!
You cannot beat this for value.  (need to check if its fake!)

It is like a lot of other things, human beings like tactile objects.

Digital photos?  People still like prints, people still shoot film and slides.
Digital music? There is a whole world for Vinyl.
Electric cars? I can guarantee that petrol cars will be kept even when electric is mainstream.

In practice many things are better and more convenient with digital but a lot of people just prefer old school, some of these people weren't born when those products first came on the market but discovered them later on themselves.

  • Thanks guys.

The current apple of my eye is this Bauhaus style one from Paulin. Being a Glasgow boy myself the brand has a lot of appeal for me (possibly foolishly but hey ho)

    https://www.paulinwatches.com/collections/commuter-numerical-watch/products/commuter-numerical-a-watch

They also do an automatic version which is rather tasty but a lot more expensive (obviously).

@raymondlin that kickstarter watch is really lovely. Can you share enough details that I can google it? Cheers

    It was this one.

That one you linked to looks like it uses the same movement, and very good price really.

Bauhaus isn’t my thing for watches but that looks a decent bit of kit for the price. Sapphire crystal, decent movement and 18mm strap width is a standard size so you’ll easily be able to get replacements or extra colours as required.

I've got a couple of Seiko 5's, a posher Seiko and a Quartz Tissot (which was the most expensive).

Currently saving for an Omega Speedmaster Pro which I'm hoping will be my lifelong daily.

I have two seiko automatics. A skx007 which was about £175 iirc and snk77 which was about fifty quid. I put a brown leather strap on that and it's the watch I wear in the office. The skx is the watch I wear most of the time outside of work.

It’s a massive, and expensive rabbit hole. Save up for what you really want, don’t settle for anything but that. You’ll only be yearning.

You can draw parallels to the old Greco Les Paul & Gibson thing.

I’m very happy with my Tissot Visodate.

    https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-gb/shop/tissot-heritage-visodate-automatic-1.html

Not the most most expensive automatic watch in the world but I love it’s classic design and I’d take it over most expensive bling watches anyway.

True I had to stop looking at watches and just be content with my lot. I started lusting after a relative modest Hamilton and you start thinking "one for this and one for that". It is very similar to guitars, you can justify buying "just one more".

Nice watches, those. That and the Seiko "Cocktail Time" seem to have nailed the vintage-modern thing really well in a sensible price range.

Of course that then gets me itchy for a vintage Datejust..

Knowing very little about watches my impression of Rolex has always been horrible fancy dials, metal bracelets with over the top gold trimmings etc.

I really like this one though. It’s a ‘79 so almost a birth year watch for me!

Yeah, that's a nice one. They definitely have a reputation as being super-flashy, because that's what a lot of people want them for. A large chunk of the modern range is really gaudy - super shiny with highly-polished fluted bezels designed to catch the light and make it very clear you have an Expensive Watch. Even the modern Submariner is a bit much these days - much chunkier than the older ones.

Just compare this lovely, relatively understated 5513 with the latest 116610:

  • Among Seiko 5s the SNKL41 is a nice option. Reminiscent of the SARB035 and easily mistaken for a grand seiko at a distance.
