Ric Ocasek of The Cars

What's Hot
News today that Ric Ocasek, one of the founding members and songwriter of '80s band The Cars has died. One of the more interesting bands of that period I thought.

Maybe best known for this track that, incidentally, raised huge amounts of money for charity.

Sad news. A classy band who merged pop sensibilities with sharp production and great songs.

I only know a few of their songs but like everything I've heard.  shame.

  • I’m also in the category of don’t know Ric and The Cars well at all but always impressed with what I’ve heard. Drive reduced me to tears for many years after it’s use at Live Aid.
    RIP Ric.

Too bad. Happy memories of the music back then.

Again I'm not that familiar with their albums but they're from the era when I religiously followed the charts so I know and like the singles.

They had the pop/new wave sound but they seemed to be well-regarded as musicians.  Elliot Easton had a column in Guitar Player for years.

A sad loss. I became aware of the band early on and love the guitar work of Elliot Easton, (who posts on the lespaulforum and is a warm individual by all accounts). I have one of Ocaseks solo CDs and it has a couple of gems on it, but they really gel as a band unit.

    RIP Ric.

I think "Heartbeat City" is one of the best pop songs ever written.

RIP, and thoughts with his loved ones.

This is I think the quintessential pop guitar solo. Gets in, says it's piece and gets out of the way.
