Bass buzz

howdy folks,
due to our singers bronchiole/lack of ability troubles, we’ve decided to tune down a half step to take the strain off him and the audience.
since doing so , I’ve found the A string tuned to g# is causing a nasty vibration around the nut. Putting some pressure on the string behind the nut stops it. This is not confined to one bass or string type either. p bass has NYXL 45 105 and dimension has chromes 45 105. Both basses vibrate in the same way. Tuning back up to A or dropping to G also stops the vibration. Have tried wrapping the strings a couple of different ways but no joy.
a capo behind the nut seems to do the trick but not ideal.
Any ideas people?
cheers!

  • For both basses to do it is quite weird. Are there enough wraps on the post?
If its any consolation it likely won't be audible live.

  • A foam mute between the strings and the headstock is a short term solution.

The long term solution is either bigger strings or slackening the truss rod to achieve the same neck relief in Eb as you used to have in E.

Wind the string further down the post when you fit it.

The A string is the usual problem for this because the G and D have a string tree and the E has a steeper break angle anyway.

  • My dimension has the A string tree but p bass doesn’t yet the same problem on both basses. Could it be a rogue frequency causing the trouble? Seems strange that when it’s tuned further down or back up to pitch the problem goes.
the vibration is audible when amplified too.

  • Install one of these on the tuner.
Never seen those.  Who supplies them?

  • Digitech Drop pedal for instant drop tuning I think you can use it on bass but correct me if wrong? amazing tool when I had one.

  • Currently using a cable tie wrapped over the A string but under the other strings behind the nut.
    looks really professional.  :o
