The best I’ve played recently was a nice Silverface Deluxe. Also, Laney Lionheart, although (for me) that was quite an unforgiving clean, but I liked the sound of it a great deal.

My 50 watt Park plexi (1967, should really have KT88s, I think, but currently has 6l6s in it) has a great clean sound, very rich and powerful, great mids, lots of tight low end, but not quite as sweetly compressed as some Fender style amps, and needs a reverb pedal.

Of all the amps I've ever owned, these stand out for their clean tones:

    • Fender Super Reverb
    • Fender Bassman (sounded very similar the SR just without reverb)
    • Fender 68 Custom Deluxe (if you can stand the background noise)
    • Peavey Classic 50 - seriously the clean tones are really good.
    Hope this helps.

There is no 'H' in Aych, you know that don't you? ~ Wife

Turns out there is an H in Haych! ~ Sporky

    Bit of trading feedback here.

I'd agree with this as well.

Despite all of the boutique loviness I still have my Peavey gets used every day..

V30? Yuk... thats not going to sound right.
No, but it’s the only premium speaker there is! If you go by what a lot of manufacturers seem to think, anyway.

It’s a great speaker - in multiple-speaker, heavy cabinets driven by powerful, overdriven amps for hard rock and modern metal sounds.

So obviously the right choice for a clean, open-back combo which is used for everything *but* that type of sound! NOT...

When I had a Hot Rod Deluxe, I put a Weber 12F150 in it.  That sounded really good.

They also did a limited edition years ago with Jensen P12N reissue.  That also sounded really good.

Both "American" style speakers not Celestions.

Didn't sound as good clean though as my Lazy J 20.

Fender Supersonic 100w Twin combo with Celestion Golds. Lovely cleans. Still got it, too heavy to move anyway haha

I'm using one at practice tonight (green one, better speaker maybe?) and i gotta say, it's very meh. Fine, but not awesome.
Each to their own, eh? :-)

Perhaps its not in the best of health - valves and bias can make a massive difference on them.
If it’s the green Limited Edition one, it may have a V30... totally the wrong speaker for that amp, makes it really loud in a shouty and characterless way.
V30? Yuk... thats not going to sound right.
you know what? i reckon that might be it. i didn't look at what speaker was in there but after a quick google, i'd bet it was the celestion and let me tell YOU, friendos - it was unpleasant. i am accustomed to plugging into a HRdlx and being able to get pleasant sounds from it but this one was just boomy, muddy, honky UNPLEASANTNESS for cleans. crunchy sounds were better but we were playing SOUL and RHYTHM & BLUES so you can keep yer crunch, buddy.

  • When I played valve amps, the clean tones I got from a Laney VC30 and an Egnater Rebel 30 were delicious.

Fender 57 Deluxe, plugged into the low input of the Mic channel with a Tele, amp turned up shy of half way (add a big box Electro Harmonix DMM for ambience).

All the lows you could want (even with a tele), those warm thick tweed mids filling out the sound, and sparkling highs without any hint of harshness. Heavenly.

With so many comparison web sites out there, how do I choose the best one?

  • Two - Rock. Literally any of them bar the 15w little ones they phased out quite quickly.

  • Without a shadow of a doubt for me, it would have to be.

    66 Super Reverb & the 40th jtm45/100.

  • I'd have to say it's a tie between a Lazy J20 and a mid-1960s Super Reverb... both absolute bliss. Only ever tried them out, never owned them, but both stunning clean sounds.
