Having a bit of a retro thing going on at the moment (it’s a semi-permanent thing really) and I’m really in a place where R&B, rock n roll, bop and blues converge.

Lately I’ve been listening to The Paladins quite a lot and I’m wanting more.

Throw stuff at me folks!  No rotten fruit though, k?

Ta very big!

  • I've never heard of The Paladins before, but I checked out some Youtube clips and really like them.

Perhaps The Hoax and The Marcus Malone Band are in that general area, but maybe a bit more blues/rock.

    It's not a competition.

    Ahh The Paladins are great.

Little Charlie and the Nightcats ( blues and swing, going for about 100 years).

The Fabulous Thunderbirds ( blues, RnB, bit poppy at times, bit avant garde at times).

The Blasters ( bit more rock’n’roll).

Lightnin Willie and the Poorboys ( another band that have been around for ages with various incarnations).

Outside choice maybe Los Lobos. They are fantastic musicians, lots of blues, rock’n’roll, trad Mexican folk, weird avant garde stuff.

Oh, which leads me to Los Fabulocos. Might be an acquired taste but Mexican meets blues and rock’n’roll. Original guitarist was Kid Ramos who was also in the Fabulous Thunderbirds for a while.

    I’m sure there are loads.

I had thought of leading you down the road of some Bluegrass - rollickin' modern roguish type bluegrass as portrayed by the likes of The Legendary Shack Shakers and others, so I'll just park a suggestion down below, and then point you towards https://www.music-map.com/ and let you play with your own suggestions as you enter some of the bands so far mentioned (some won't register)

I did try to listen to a bit of his stuff yesterday but it’s on the rather OTT end of the spectrum for my taste. Thanks all the same.

Funny, I hadn't heard of the Paladins either; looked them up and thought of RHH and that psychobilly vibe in general. Also had Imelda May and the Dodge Brothers (Mark Kermode's band) spring to mind.

I’d forgotten this was by The Blasters, also could appear in the tremolo songs Discussion

I might be losing the plot but The Kentucky Headhunters? Blues, country, rock’n’roll, lots of guitars...

    https://youtu.be/u9X-WMolzTg

And for anyone who thought Los Lobos were just La Bamba

I don’t know them well at all but NRBQ

    https://youtu.be/-d5Hdqyjj5o

And actual, shock, contemporary ( French ) musicians whom I saw earlier this year

  • I think Robert Gordon might be your man. Apparently someone asked him how he related to the 60's & he just said " I didn't"

Some live footage with Chris Spedding-

Chris Spedding's solo stuff is worth checking out too.

Also, if you check out Los Rebel Cats
I'd say they are in this area & you also find some other Mexican bands into the same stuff.

Excellent suggestions in The Shack Shakers & anything with Kid Ramos

  • Here's a bit of an obscure one, there's an Austrian band called The Incredible Staggers that I got into when I lived there. They used to be called the Staggers but I think there's another band with the same name so they added in the extra word. The album I had was called Teenage Trash Insanity

Link to the whole album here but it's on Spotify with their follow up album too

Seems a similar vibe to the Paladins type thing albeit basically a pastiche

The bass player / producer for JD McPherson, Jimmy Sutton, had a band called the Four Charms, who are well worth checking out. There’s a bit of Nat King Cole Trio type vibe (when Nat was doing rhythm and blues rather than sophisticated ballads) and roots rock/swing/rockabilly vibe.

The guitar player (Joel Paterson) for the Four Charms is a total monster player, and worth checking his own stuff, too.

They say a new life begins at 60 :) Loads still to enjoy.

Btw That song in the JD video borrows the chord changes and some of the tune from the popular drunk's song "Show me the way to go home".  Once you've heard the similarity it's hard to unhear it :D
