It’s the names of the sharps (and flats) for each key. 

C major and A minor don’t have any sharps or flats. 

Going clockwise, accumulating sharps:

G major has one sharp - F#. “Father”. 

D major has two sharps - F# and C#. “Father Charles”. 

Going round the other way accumulating flats:

 F major has one flat - Bb. “Battle”. 

Bb major has 2 flats - Bb and Eb. “Battle Ends”. 

The minor keys are also subject to the same formula, so Bb’s relative minor, G minor, also has the same two flats.

I've always found it very useful, and still refer to it on occasions, when my brain blanks out. Going backwards for the Flats takes a bit more getting used to, than forwards for the Sharps. I have also found FACE, and All Cows Eat Grass of value as well.

@viz thanks! I never had a formula for that so I'll memorise it. Will come in handy instead of counting it each time.

@archtopdave FACE is for music notation, I presume. Is the All Cows Eat Grass another variation of that? Or is it some other clever thing?

See how amazing it is that father charles etc is the reverse of battle ends for the flats!

I’ve started some lessons recently with theory a focus as I have none ..

tutor explained starting at C anti-clockwise 

F => BEAD =>Gb Flats 

F# > DAEB => G sharps .  

Basically bead n its mirror deab

If you’re going anti clockwise all the way your 2nd line would need to be F# BEAD G

An easy way to remember it clockwise is:

1) start with C (for circle)
2) pluck a 5-string bass from top to bottom: G D A E B
3) detune by a semitone and repeat: Gb Db Ab Eb Bb
4) end with F (for fifths)

 

But probably the best way is to start with C at noon and go clockwise and anticlockwise to 6:00

Make up mnemonics that work for you, like Girls Don’t Always Eat Boyfriends or Great Danes and English Breakfasts or whatever for clockwise down to 6:00, and F-Bead is quite memorable anyway for anticlockwise to 7:00.
