Most versatile guitar for pub rock covers band?

What's Hot
PC_DavePC_Dave Frets: 3396
Just joined a local band that does the pub gig scene.

The chap that runs it / bass player / singer is quite clearly mad, and mostly drunk, but I don't have any other prospects at the moment being knew to the area, so this is all i've got....

Any way, he's mad, and will not allow me to play a strat for whatever reason. I'm having to sell the Suhr Alt T Pro I recently picked up (circumstances), so i'm after the most versatile guitar that isn't a strat, for not a massive wad of cash.

Band plays anything from Steppenwolf to Queen to Hendrix to Oasis to the Kinks to the Spencer Davis Group - it's all very rocky, but quite varied.

Oh, and i'm completely allergic to the Les Paul.

What a people's thoughts on this? I was considering a Yamaha 611 or something along those lines.

Discuss.....

Something H-S-S or HH with the ability to split humbuckers.  Take your pick!

I'd tell him to fuck off personally. Tell him he can't play whatever bass he has but don't explain why.

I will eventually, but I need to get back out gigging, and it's fairly decent cash for not much hard work, so.....

I'd go for something like one of the cheaper Gibson SG's.  Nice and light, relatively versatile, isn't a Strat.

Wait - what guitar did Hendix play again?

Failing that, Baja Tele, SG, some sort of 335 a like, or maybe a Jazzmaster?

And failing that, just turn up to rehearsal with one of these:

Yamaha 611 would be very versatile, and not irreplaceable should you decide to belt the bassist/singer with it ;)
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

  • I would have said an HSS Strat but it would appear that's ruled out. I'm increasingly using my PRS S2 (H-H guitar) for gigs in place of my Strat.

Let me know where you're playing as you're in Devon like me.

    It's not a competition.

That is exactly my thought process. They don't seem to come up s/h too often.

Wasn't sure whether to look at the 611 with the P90, or the 612 SSH...

Seriously, my covers band does a lot of that stuff, Beatles to Foo Fighters and all/ most points between and you can do it all with a Tele, a couple of different drive pedals and the controls on the guitar.

  • Are they the sort of covers band that want to do carbon copy, note perfect covers? I'm guessing if he won't let you play a strat then he's not concerned about nailing the strat sound, so I'd say just play whatever you like.

My weapon of choice would be an Ibanez RG, which can comfortably do the strat 2 & 4 positions if necessary.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions for PRS, too.

Oh, and don't stop looking for another band. This one sounds doomed from the start. :)  Best of luck though.

  • Custom pickguard for your Strat that says not a Strat on it. Sorted

Talk to me about what Tele -  as mentioned above there is the Baja, but i've heard not good things about the extra position.

And i've never played a Tele that gives me the fizz. (Apart from the Suhr)

Tele with a humbucker/filtertron neck would probably cover it all.

Exactly this - It's not a note for note, but he's just a bit of a bellend, and this is a good way to get out there and meet some real musicians.

I really want a DGT but that is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my budget at the moment.

I wouldn't inflict this band upon anyone, but maybe when a better one comes up i'll let you know :)

That makes me want to throw up in my mouth.

But I get where you're going with the suggestion....

  • Whatever feels best for you, tbh. 99% of the audience (at least) won't care if it's single coils when it should be humbuckers, or vice versa... just sayin'...
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)
