  • There is no such thing as a perfect guitar design, or discussions like this would never occur (or need to)
I'll settle for a bit of banter & aspiration  ;)
I've changed the title slightly because I know what you mean.

Its the sort of shit I post after a couple too many drinks: )

    But I'm still interested!

Oh bugger. I thought he was in the Jesus & Mary Chain, but the spelling is awry...
Why do I get the feeling I'm likely to be disappointed?

From a comfort point of view my SG is closest to perfect I’ve owned. Just seems to fit nicely. Doesn’t sound as good as a LP but also let’s me reach the higher frets and doesn’t kill my shoulder after a long rehearsal. Sustain and looks wise etc not so perfect.

A strat wth fat and middy humbuckers would probably actually be “perfect” but maybe that’s also why I find them so boring and bog-standard.

The perfect guitar for me will be the one that makes me sound good all of the time.

Lord Lucan is building it, and it will be delivered by Shergar.

    The Stratocaster.

OK, we all have personal preferences and quibbles as regards neck shape, fret size, fretboard radius, trussrod adjustment, vintage or modern hardware, upper fret access....

But just to look at it.... the headstock shape, the body outline, the way the scratchplate complements it, the body contouring, the jack plate, the angled bridge pickup.... it's perfect, it's beautiful.  It couldn't be better.

Currently, this is about as close to perfect as I can imagine.

The 1959 Telecaster, it's so much better than the 1960 one.
    Like chalk and cheese.

  • I do think the Strat is a great-looking guitar, but every time I look at my GJ2 I think to myself 'ooh, that really is pretty'. If it had a thru-neck with unrestricted access to the top frets then it would actually be perfect to me...

Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)

The Strat, the Tele and the LP for me in terms of aesthetics are all perfect.

For aesthetics alone I'd go with that.

Taking into account the number of frets, upper fret access, weight and balance I might go with a PRS Custom 24.

    It's not a competition.

  • I'd probably go junior too but I'd definitely tweak the sc junior design because the lip isn't great so a normal long tenon would sort that and a belly contour and more sculpting around the heel etc to bring it up to modern expectations
That sounds like a Collings 290

Yep. Apart from the useless switch/eldred wiring

  • No.

All of the classic designs are flawed (yes I do have them nevertheless).

The closest thing to my perfect design only exists inside my head. It will probably never find its way out either.
I sometimes think, therefore I am intermittent
