Which side is your hot tap on?

What's Hot
Emp_FabEmp_Fab Frets: 24300
Which way are the taps in your house?

Hot on the left, Cold on the right or vice-versa?

Mixer tap owners can play too if you have one of those central up & down to adjust the flow and left & right for temperature valves.  If you turn it anticlockwise for cold then that counts as cold being on the left.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

As far as I know it's supposed to be a standard that hot is on the left, so people don't scald themselves if they turn on a tap in an unfamiliar room or in the dark.

That said we have one basin where hot is on the right.

I believe it was because most people are right handed and cold is the one that is used the most.
Before we had hot and cold running water we just had cold water brought in by a hand pump- the pump control was put on the right again because most people are right handed.

I tell a lie!  I’ve just spotted that my bath is hot on the left, but the bathroom sink is hot on the right!

    Hot left, cold right ...

except for the bath, where the plumber got confused and did it backwards, despite the tap being labelled the same as the others (I assume because it was facing the wrong way and he was upside down). I've been too lazy to change it as we hardly ever use it.

They’re supposed to be standardised hot on the left because, blind people. Depends who installed them though, a lot of plumbers don’t seem to know left from right.

Always cold on the right, that's how I was taught when I did my plumbing NVQ.

  • I designed and sold bathrooms for 13 years before retiring at the beginning of this year.  The correct configuration is hot on the left.

All my sinks are hot left/cold right. My bath mixer tap is the opposite, hot on the right, tap fitted at left end of the bath.
Someone told me baths are fitted with the hot furthest from the edge, to reduce the chances of kids leaning over and turning the hot tap on.

Funnily enough, that's how I remember the orientation of navigation lights on boats and planes!  Red=Left.  Also port (the drink) is red so red=left=port.
