There are so many great Christmas songs. Kelly Clarkson's Run Run Rudolph rendition of the Chuck Berry song comes to mind. When you hear the perennial classic, Slade's Merry Christmas Everyone, in a store, you know that it is Christmas in England.

However, for me, The Trans Siberian Orchestra's - Christmas Eve is a standout. I believe that this song is also known as The Carol of the Bells:-

Somewhat of a protest against the commercialisation of christmas but always considered a christmas song

Greg Lake and I believe in father christmas - To me it has the traditional 'hark the herald' christmas carol about it with the bells and the big choir - A great song - well written etc

I love the 'irony' of the video at the end - The final lyrics are 'the christmas we get we deserve' and the video shows mass bombings of the USA planes over Vietnam followed by a USA GI walking back down his track to home, then see's his young kid and they hug

Still have time for Mariah Carey and Chris Rea (great piano playing in that by Max Middleton ex J Beck amongst others)

Bryan Adams cover of Run Run Rudolph and can add Bruce Springsteen to that

Then Bruce's Santa Clause is coming to town, mainly because of big Clarence on sax

IMO far less of a corny vibe about them - change the lyrics and they would still be a hit as a song throughout the year

  • It’s a tie between Wizard, slade ,Greg lake ,wings and mike oldfield . Mike oldfield especially as in dulce jubilo also has the very Christmassy on horseback on the b side . Have you noticed you never see showaddywaddys hey mr Christmas on a lot of compilations. Must be a licensing thing, pity as it’s very good

So many to choose from. I like most of them to be honest

Slade  - reminds me of spotting of 'best' Christmas present sitting unwrapped on the top of my mum's wardrobe. They year I stopped believing in Santa.

Paul Macartney - Pipes of Peace - epic college piss up.

Pogues - Fairytale of New York - many years singing this pissed in the pub on Christmas Eve

    S Club 7 - Never Had a Dream Come True - I had a massive crush on Jo O'Meara

East 17 - Stay Another Day - relationship break up

But I think the one I always look forward to is 'Stop The Cavalry' - Jona Lewie. Not sure why, when there's so many good ones, but just find it easy to sing to, has a good Christmas feel and a good message.
