Marshall clean tones

What's Hot

Spurred on by getting my JTM45 back and a conversation with @shugz we have come to the decision that not enough people talk about how good the Marshall clean tone is (vintage styled Marshall’s that is).

Totally different to the Fender sound, much bigger, more sustain, mid punch. Just excellent.

Does anyone on here use a Marshall for its clean tone?

Marshall vintage cleans amazing, especially with good pickups (vintage or modern). I know Marshall are hardly underrated or unknown but they are seen mostly for the walls of doom etc.

They made some great old amps that really did cover a lot of ground sonically.

    Cheers

Yes I use a clean tone on my JTM45 when the mood suits me, utterly superb especially when mixed with good reverb!
Tomorrow will be a good day.

    Agree - they are fab

JCM800 reissue low input - awesome clean sound
    Red ones are better.

    Absolutely.

I had a 4010 combo from ‘81 and the clean with gain on full was fantastic, with a valve overdrive pedal into the front it sounded great.

I prefer these sort of cleans to the super clean scooped Fender thing. One day I’ll end up with a JTM45! The Silver Jubilee has a great clean channel too.

The best Marshall clean sound I ever heard was an old JTM45 100w plexi. The owner brought it to me to have the standby switch changed as it had snapped off. Through my old basketweave cab in the front room it was simply amazing.

I had an old plexi Super Bass that came close, but that old JTM was something else.

There’s nothing like the cleans from a Marshall stack super lead/bass/p.a.  I’ll tell all about the cleans from the Artiste series 71-75 once I get this rattle problem fixed. So underrated.

  • I still hold that the jtm45 is the best amp on the planet, just too big for my current needs.

I actually prefer plexi cleans these days.

I think a lot of people are used to things like dsls that have murky cleans

I have an early 1987x reissue (pre fx loop) that runs 6l6s - lovely clean sound and great with a pedal in front.

JTM45 is great, but it is not the same as anything after 1969 approx, I had a 71 Super bass that I converted to super lead spec and the clean settings on that were amazing, but different to a JTM45

  • I have a 50w Carlsbro head from the 60s that the previous owner had the preamp wired like a JTM. I played it on a big stage at an outdoor gig during the summer and it was brilliant with my bass.

I've had my 1968 vintage 50w plexi for over 40 years. A number of different cabs getting lighter, but always that amp clean. I have other amps but nothing touches it for clean and I still gig it regularly.

I'm currently in the low setting on my homemade 36watt plexi and sounds great to me at sensible vol levels

Origin 50 has great classic clean too - surprised me as a predominantly Fender Tweed and BF purist.

How was the gig?  I saw them a few years ago and they were superb.

    All their albums are solid.

  • much underrated, I only play clean. Ascape Studios in Bromley had a marvellous red Marshall stack, serviced by Dave Lane, best clean tones this side of a silver faced 70s twin.
