Very very sad, only 59 years old.  Had been in bad health since the '90s, but was recently diagnosed with inoperable throat cancer.

Sounds like he had a few tough few years - very sad. Big Black were hugely important to me growing up and their back catalogue still sounds stellar - first side of "Songs About..." is pretty much perfect.
