Hi folks,

it's been a while since i posted here, hope you're all well.

A few years ago, via this very forum, I was turned on to Level 42's Guaranteed album by @bigjon.  ;;;

I really like the tune Overtime and have all the chords worked out, apart from one bit!

I'm hearing the verse as a big Gm6 vamp.
The chords to the chorus are:|Cmaj7 | B7 | Em7 | mystery section..... |I think the first chord stab is a G7, but I can't fill in the blanks and make them sound right!

    Wow that’s a great song.

The stabs have the bass notes just going up the scale, so (including the first, longer, E):

    E F G A B C

    And the chords are

    Em
    F
    C (2nd inv) - ie C/G
    Am
    G (1st inv) - ie G/B
    Cmaj7

    So I’d probably play them:

    022000
    133211
    332010
    x02210
    x2003x
    x32000

    or something.

Or if I wanted to preserve the upper melody and play lighter chords I’d do something like

    x7x987
    x 8 10 10 10 x
    x 10 10 9 8 x
    xx755x
    xx978x
    x x 10 9 8 7
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

I’m with @viz for the most part here. First couple of chords I differ though. I hear it like this

    G/F
    F/G
    Am7
    G/B... possibly Bm7#5
    Cmaj7

I’d probably play sparse voicings here to be honest, keeping the top line that’s in the keys part.

    x-x-x-7-8-7

    x-x-x-5-6-5

    x-x-5-5-5-x

    x-x-9-7-8-x or possibly x-x-7-7-8-x

    x-x-x-9-8-7

  • Thanks @viz ; and @Brad .

I am using your voicings, Brad and playing the x-x-9-7-8-x   voicing.

Cheers, it's been bugging me for ages that one.

No worries man. Regards to that voicing, I’m not 100% either way and it’s not enough to drastically change things anyway. Lovely changes mind.

    P.S I’d make the Em7 an Em9 too
