As I understand it from the comments on the news this morning the Golden Globes has been shedding viewers for years and they wanted to generate some interest; anyone in that audience who gets a mention in the speech will have been told about it ( they are actors, they are acting their response) beforehand.

It's the lack an arc in his comments .... it's normally offend, really offend and then finish on something not offensive and a bit complimentary. He basically just insulted them in the most offensive way he could and left it at that. Totally brilliant I thought
