Can I Nitro over Poly?

Got a partscaster on the go, body is away for paint, however the Rosewood boarded neck is that insipid pale colour much favoured lately and it really doesn't suit the vibe....Id much prefer a vintage tint and have some in Nitro, can I spray Nitro on top of Poly and if so what grit to key the surface?.....
