I'm a bit of a novice self-taught guitarist that's finding my way around the fretboard in an 'iterative' - 'it sounds good' kind of way.

I've recently ventured into playing chords in different voiceings which has made writing songs and jamming a lot more fun.

My current favorite chord is Am maj7(#11) - I used an online guitar analyser to show me...

It's just a gorgeous chord, full of dynamics.....

  • How are you playing/spelling that?
    My trading feedback

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

My favourite chord is probably an open A5. One finger (with maybe the thumb over to mute the low E). That's rawk!

For me its the substitution of a iv minor with a bVII13.

    So instead of D - Dm - A, you’d do D - G13 - A

    x5777x
    x5776x
    577600

    you’d do

    x5777x
    3x345x
    577600

    Savour that G13, it’s gorgeous!

    A D with a G in the bass.

An example, the first chord of the chorus of 'Reelin' in the years - it's often missed.

(F is on the bottom at the 8th fret)

IMO, this is another nice quartal (4ths) voicing. An inversion of GCFB.

Using the 7th-3rd-4th-1st notes of G Mixolydian or whatever your ear says (Lydian?).

Nice Major 7th inversion that has two fifths intervals in the voicing.
    (3rd-7th-1st-5th)

    CMajor7th
    E B C G

    An interesting 7th chord inversion.
    (5th-3rd-7th-1st)

    CMaj7th
    G E B C

You can move these through each mode of a Major scale using the 5th-3rd-7th-1st of each mode.

Example (5th-3rd-7th-1st) of C Major modes:

    Ionian is G E B C
    Dorian is A F C D
    Phrygian is B G D E
    Lydian is C A E F
    Mixolydian is  D B F G
    Aeolian is E C G A
    Locrian is F D A B

  • Either Bm11 (voiced BADE) or Bbmaj#11 (BbADE) I love the 2nd on the top for some reason.

How about this for a weird, but effective, one? Say as a 'G' chord....

Barre the chord as if you're playing a barred G7, but play  the G on the bottom E string, the Db on the A string, the F on the D string, the B on the G string, the Eb on the B string and the G on the top E string.

Sounds hideous by itself, but try it as a prelude to a C maj 7 resolution, say as a lead in to a song starting in C maj 7.

Technically, I'm guessing that the chord is a G7, flat 5th sharp 5th. Would that be right?

Yep. Also often referred to as a G Altered chord (G alt), although that can take many variations, based around the Altered scale which is cool af.
