Tru Oil Aerosol / Spray

I have a Strat neck finished in Tru Oil.

I painstakingly removed the Tru Oil finish off the surface of the headstock (took 1/2mm thickness off) and then applied an acrylic spray lacquer. In retrospect, there was obviously some tru oil remaining - the solvent in the lacquer reacted with the tru oil and resulted in this rather unflattering fishscale appearance...

Fortunately the whole thing dissolved off with nail polish remover. I have now re-applied tru oil and wish to apply a Rothko and Frost waterslide decal.

The official position is that most decals are not compatible with Tru Oil, but apparently the problem involves the manual handling involved whilst applying the oil - and doing so as an aerosol would result in a good result.

Tru Oil Aerosol doesn’t seem to be available though. How do I go about this please?

Expert opinions deeply appreciated

Not an expert opinion, but what works for me. The solvents in Tru-Oil, and other oil finishes, can cause the film in some waterslide transfers to buckle. I make my own transfers using waterslide paper, an ink jet printer, and a coat of poly-urethane varnish to stop the printer ink washing off. Once the transfer is in place and dry I give it a light spray with the varnish before the oil top coats.

Thanks Roland - so to summarise (please correct me if I'm wrong)

    1. So you tru oil the headstock.

    2. You spray a layer of polyurethane varnish over the tru oiled headstock

    3. Apply the decal - allow to dry

    4. You spray another layer of polyurethane varnish over the dried decal

    5. Then continue with multiple coats of Tru Oil...

    Would that be correct?

Nearly. There’s no step two. Nowadays I use Osmo 3032 rather than Tru-Oil because it doesn’t go as yellow, dries faster, and is harder.
