Is there any reason why I couldn't fit a 5 position rotary selector switch in place of the bridge tone control? I'm always knocking the damn thing with my right hand.

    No reason you couldn't. You might find it a pain to switch quickly on the fly though.

    There's also no need to stick to the five settings if you don't want - you can easily get 2-pole 6-way rotary switches, so you could add the neck+bridge combination as well.
