If I measure the output with a multimeter and turn the trimpot either up or down the voltage remains constant. Does that suggest my trim pot is buggered? 

Or does it only do its thing when plugged in or something?

If it uses a voltage regulator then it probably won’t change until you draw some current through a load.

Cheers. Probably best off to just twiddle it while plugged in then and listen to if it sounds different
