I have been doing this a fair amount at work and today posted this on our facebook page..  I thought maybe some of you guys would like to see.. (that's the timber company I am currently working with, not my guitar page).

So heres a piece of spalted London Plane.. Stunning wood...

You start by making sure that the bottom edge is as flat as possible.. If its not it will go through the blade wonky and will fail.. So drawn a line down the middle to follow.

Also consider if you ever do this that for this to work the spalting (in this case) or what ever wood grain you are bookmatching needs to go through the whole piece, or you will end up with a not very bookmatched top..

Then when I make the first cut, I always make sure its straight.. Again, if not it will just wont cut straight..

Then start feeding it through. Don't put too much pressure on, let the blade do the work and just push gently.. If you try and rush it, it will again cut wonky..
