i was working with a very basic workshop  today until my move is done.

it wast even the dining  room table, it was the end of a bed with a towel put over it.   If the frets needed  more levelling i would have moved to a solid surface, but since this was mostly polishing it was fine.   I feel like a teenager doing his first mods again, cant wait to have my workshop back.   although its nice to remind myself i can do a lot without fancy tools

    tool list:
Sandpaper (400-1000g for frets, the 150 was for stripping the neck)
    Micromesh abrasive (1500-12000g)
small firm but flexible sanding block
    sharpening stone
    Straight edge
    0000 liberon wire wool
    Tape
    Permanent marker
    fret guard
    fret rocker

i  really struggle to take good pictures of frets, but they are nicely rounded and super shiny.  going to feel much better.   i also rounded the board edges at the same time, although it should be noted they were not as sharp as i expected at this price point

  • I'm a great fan of Squiers.

They are a modders dream, because the basics are pretty much always good and give a great canvas for all sorts of modding sorcery!

only thing i will note is the body wood choice wont hold a screw thread brilliantly.... which can be an unexpected pain for newbie modders,

Squier body wood can be a bit hit and miss. Here's the neck pocket of a recent VM Jazzmaster:

That looks more like  i was expecting...

i have since dyed the fretboard with darkbrown fiebings leather oil.  This then gets rubbed backwith the wire wool and i finish by oiling the board.   The dye does stain plastic, i have used it to my advantage here and let it tint the dots a bit.  i have purposely left them darker at the body end as that's how they tend to age.

I also gave the neck a light tint, coat of oil and put it all back together.   the enck will get more work when i come to ageing the body, but its enough for now.

Nut has also been reshapped and polished up a bit and with that all done i have given it a set-up.   Its now sporting a super low buzz free action... doesn't suit the vibe of the guitar, but im happy its capable of it.

i also finally plugged it in, and the pickups are not terrible.  totally usable really.   the controls are also nice and smooth with a fairly even taper.... what is going on in the world!!

I also dug out some spare parts

Maybe I shouldn't have ordered a plate from China

If it’s sneezing when it arrives, walk away.

Small news but the plate arrived from a UK seller... I figured the China one would be a while.

Test fit with the white covers

I'm left with a choice.   The one with pickups is slightly better quality than the China plate, but not much in it.

    The china one is browner

I should also say they will both end up a shade darker once aged

I like the lighter one.  I seem to remember that the older plates were more like that.

Finally found the slide switches I thought I had for this, but they were on/on, not the on/off/on I need to fit the plate.  Although I found another set of white  pickup covers I aged a few years back.

I have ordered a toranado bridge and set of white button klusons.
