The Australian Woolworths was nothing to do with its UK namesake - I was confused by this for a good while when I lived there.  Doesn't help that they call it 'Woolies' either
Yes and No, ultimately all Woolworths companies originated from the U.S where the parent F.W Woolworths company started.

    Pratts (Streatham)
Pratts was still there when I moved to Streatham, but closed not long after - a real old fashioned department store!  Now it's a Lidl.
When I was at primary school it was how I spent  my Friday night, most weeks. Drive into Streatham to wander round Pratts. Not entirely sure why to be honest. My parents obviously liked it.

All I remember was that it was like a maze, and that we used to park down the road where Cynthia Payne had her brothel.

I haven’t been back to Streatham for ages. Had no idea it was a Lidl now.
There's a pub opposite (I think it was a Job Centre 30 years ago) called Pratts & Payne.  I've only just realised where the name came from, I'd never thought about it before!

I wonder if they accept luncheon vouchers for payment like she did :)

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

Weren't they part of the John Lewis group? I certainly remember they used the 'never knowingly undersold' line.

They were indeed.  Apparently Pratts attracted lots of Saturday shoppers to the area, I can't imagine many make a pilgrimage to Streatham nowadays for any particular reason, except maybe the ice rink.

Used to be all over the place (particularly Luton, for some weird reason), now food for crows.

EXCEPT up and down the A1, which is infested with the things.  Are North/South travellers particularly kinky?  Crazed with lust for herbal Viagra and rubber fists?  Baffling.

That’s what I thought too, at the time I was there, but it really has no affiliation whatsoever. The founders named it after FW Woolworth, and got away with it as the name hadn’t been registered in Aus.

Edit - I always liked the fact that Burger King was called Hungry Jack’s in Australia for years, as the owner of a takeaway already had the trademark and wouldn’t budge.

Speaking of takeaways, anyone remember Spud-u-Like? Wimpy was nearly as dismal, at least the ones near me were.

I recall losing a tooth at the age of about 10 in the Manchester Piccadilly Gardens branch of Spud-u-Like.  Much blood, maximum potato n beanz.

As for Wimpy, I swear they had a dessert named the 'Brown Derby'.  Asking for trouble...

My parents met at the ice rink.

    My mum is from Tooting.

They used to have really famous bands play there back in the 60s. I’m pretty sure my old man told me he saw the Rolling Stones play there.

Where we stayed near Perth there was a Hungry Jacks just down the road, seemed slightly funny as our son Jack was with us. Quite disappointing that it turned out to be a Burger King

Although the original US brand still exists I believe.

Some people might recall the blink and you’d miss it appearance of Carrefour on a few U.K. high streets, still a big name in France ( and some products available in the U.K. via Ocado I believe).

Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.
