Amp for small gigs

We play mainly small gigs unmiced. What do you guys prefer between big amp with master volume low (can sound thin and fizzy), big amp cranked with good attenuator (i find too much attenuation van suck tone and get lost in a mix) or small amp (can sound small). All have good and bad points.

So is that your preference? Smaller amp?

There are big amps with master volumes that work well too.

For a small unmic'ed gig I prefer a big amp with a good master volume, or attenuation as well - they just sound better even at the same volume, and fill the space better at *lower* volume than a small amp in my experience. The only real downside is that they're big and heavy.

Yes it is. A decent 15W 1x12 amp is all I need.
