You could use the Spike Milligan approach, just concentrate on getting one good sideburn.

My son is a brilliant barber so I’m fine. I’m a qualified barber but nowhere near his level so he might be in trouble .

Two weeks ago it was a number 4 on top and 2 at the sides.

Its getting longer now. 

Mostly tho I’m terrified by the fact my ears are about 6 times longer than usual and my hair has gone white with brown patches...

Speaking of which, we're going to have to have a go at our cavachon before too long. In theory it's not complicated as he just has one coat, but he's a little bugger and of course we don't have a groomer's harness.

I tried growing my hair a year or so back, without washing it. It felt lovely, naturally waxy and full of volume. Things fall apart at the back though, it sort of stands up and I guess you have to wait until it's got the natural weight to it. My wife persuaded me to wash it and it's the worst decision I could have made. It ended up looking like a limp helmet stuck to my head, all the life went out of it.

I'm another one who's gone to using clippers at home - left to grow of its own volition, I get a load at the sides and back, not so much on top.  A bit like Dennis Waterman in later episodes of The Sweeney.  Not the greatest look even without the bad kipper tie, ciggie, and glass of Scotch.

Think I'll watch this one from the sidelines

It’s not the top that worries me it’s the sides. Top is straight but back and sides very curly. Without taming the sides it will look crazy. Perhaps some tactical snippage of the back will be required.
