Fuzz Advice: searching for a specific sound

darcymdarcym Frets: 1297
I've only really been turned onto fuzz'es in the last 2 years as I just couldn't work with them. Some nice tips from @AlexHunter and a few others got me actually able to get some good sounds out of it.

in my isolation period I've been working on a track I'm writing and getting close to completing it, I've got a section in it, that has a very similar feel to John Mayers "I guess I just feel like" outro. The Fuzz sound he uses for the outro solo is pretty much the sound I want to drop into

I've got a ton of fuzzes lined up and I've got the champ style amp that was used for this sound, give me some views on how I can get ball park this sound, to me it sounds like an "angry" voiced fuzz that's not being drive, rather than a weaker sound Fuzz that is being driven.

I've got these fuzzed lined up

Thorpy fallout cloud
Frantone Cream Puff
Analogman peppermint fuzz (and dark peppermint model)
Keeley Fuzzhead
Keeley son of fuzzhead

how can I approach this ? ideas for some good settings

It is the champ cranked for that tone, tone rolled off, sort of Clapton style.

Btw how is the peppermint fuzz I would like one of those

Do you own an Audio Interface or know how to get guitar audio in and out of a PC? If so there is a shedload of 30day trials of great software ('DAWs') Cubase has Amplitube, Reaper has some git processing, Samplitude has 'Plunder' or some such daft name but is said to be good.

So the fallout cloud would work admirably with that solo, but........ there is an overtime there that is quite cutting and as such I’d probably say the field Marshal is the better choice in this regard...

    hope that’s ok?

I was going to suggest you come over and try my new fuzz32 from mad professor as you’re based in Bath but that’s out of the question for the time being :(

this sir is very ok, the fallout cloud changed my relationship and perception of fuzz, so this is a strong recommendation. I shall place an order.

gutted about this, I've seen the new fuzz32 advertised, and I really like mad professor pedals too.

It's not very fuzzy but seems to me there's Octavia/Octafuzz or similar going on. So a fuzz face-type box with an octave, praps with a mix control like the Fur Coat has. Or maybe the rolled-back tone + calmed fuzz setting is sanitising the ring-moddy-ness of the octave. With an Octafuzz the fuzz on zero and unity-ish vol into a lightly driving amp might work but never tried that, use mine maxed for mayhem.

Further to add from my post earlier.  He said on his Instagram, that the tone was the amp cranked and an epiphone casino.

I saw a few posts on Reddit as well. It's a great sound.

I saw that also, but when you watch the instagram video of it - it still feels like there is something in the chain, you don't see the chain you just an amp

The Fallout Cloud totally changed my opinion of fuzzes too. I’ve owned several others but never liked any of them until I got the V2 FC - brilliant pedal.

@ThorpyFX field marshal - %98 dead on out of the box with a fender clean amp, %99 using the champ amp, what an amazing pedal ! doing my research on this pedal before purchasing on a few peoples advice it's based off the cheese puff, like the JHS version, but I can see you tweaked this a bit, care to talk about some of the tweaks you made and how it changes the pedal, it's killer it really is.

Yeah why not. the Field marshal is a MK2 version of the Venerable LOVETONE big cheese. This is a pedal released in the 1990s and was really quite well used  by most of the worlds guitar heroes of that time. their artist roster was insane. The Big cheese was designed by Dan Coggins who just so happens to be one of my best mates and is a certifiable pedal genius. we had been working on The FM for about a year when the JHS clone of the original was released, we however were never going to go down that route. The Field Marshal was designed to be quieter (noise wise) than the original, Louder in terms of volume, more open, dynamic and yet capture all of the original Big cheese sounds in there too. its more functionally flexible and on top of that, its also a LOT smaller than the original.

closest analogy is, the original Big cheese is like an awesome 911 turbo from the 90s, air cooled and badass. The Field Marshal is the SINGER version... faster, louder, still  undeniably porsche in its DNA but a different beast when you want it to be.

i rambled on a bit there.....

love this description, you can totally hear the low noise, for a fuzz, it's silent. I'm really loving this pedal already, I'm only half a day in to be fair, but it's rare something makes an impact on me like this, more so something fuzz related. You've hit gold on this.

    thank you
