    1. Goodfellas - just very entertaining, if you're into killing and torture
    2. Godfather 2 - I liked the dual film of past and present
    3. Godfather 1 - classic, but found it a bit slow-moving in parts
    4. Casino - similar but just not as good as Goodfellas. Sharon Stone and De Niro both superb.
    5. Godfather 3 - found it ok, watchable, but not as good as the above

From Britain I did like Rise of the Footsoldier. Based on a true story

I would add The Untouchables, not as good as the classic ones but very entertaining. And the Usual Suspects.

I think I must be the only person on the planet who's never seen any of the Godfather movies.

I'm a fan of the genre, but have never sight them out to watch.

Nope, I've not seen any either. Might have to rectify that if lockdown continues.

Nice one, I'd add Carlito's Way somewhere in that top!

Saying that the best I've ever watched is Mesrine. It's in French so not many people know about it, but it is amazing. 2 parts and based on a true story.

Never seen any of the Godfather films either.

Goodfellas is good, but way too long. Cut out the word "fuck" and it's an hour shorter.
Is it Goodfellas or Casino where Joe Pesci calls someone a "Fuckin' Fuck" ?

  • As other have said the Sopranos is probably the best, but if it has to have a run time of less than 3583 minutes, then

    Scarface
    Bonnie and Clyde
    White Heat
    Infernal Affairs

Casino and Goofellas are both superb films, very stylised, awesome soundtracks, elements of true stories, superb acting and cinematography.

Donny Brasco is another superb film, probanly more crime than gangster.

And a big shoutout for The Departed will Jack Nicholson.

  • Goodfellas for me. Possibly my favourite film of any genre ever.
Just so people are aware. I have no idea what any of these words mean.

A lot of these films are 'mob' films opposed to films dealing with 'organised crime', and the 'mob film' is a largely an Italian American construct.

I've seen most of the films mentioned being the Godfather, Casino, Goodfellas etc, but I prefer some other films out there.

Along the lines of 'Goodfellas' which is aspirational, I prefer 'Animal Kingdom' which is based in fatalism instead.

Even if it's not a 'mob' film but a film concerning organised crime, I think 'The Third Man' is in it's own class.

For modern French films, I'm not a fan of the Mesrine films, I prefer 'A Prophet' & 'The Beat My Heart Skipped'.

The Brazilian film 'City of God' is superb as well.

  • Godfather 1 and 2 are correctly lauded as the genre defining gangster films.

More recently, I would actually say American Gangster with Denzel Washington is an excellent example.
