Is the '... Planet of the Apes' the best trilogy of modern times?

The story, the emotion, the effects? Just a triumph.

    Doesn’t number 4 come out in 2021?

I've not seen these, I really should check them out I loved the same director (can't spell his name) 'Dekalog' (ie Ten Commandments) which is truly exceptional.

    No, Despicable Me is.

Despicable 2 really is a lot of fun.

Even though there was another, the Toy Story trilogy is very good as well.

The Before Sunset trilogy is decent as well, 3 very different films.

Just watched the third one which I hadn’t seen before.
As a trilogy it does the usual trilogy thing of the middle one having to tread water/ fill in the gaps a bit. It also fails as a trilogy because although there is a story arc that runs through them they are surprisingly different films. The first one is, I guess, this intense sci fi thriller, the second a post apocalyptic romp and the third a war movie.

Having said that I don’t have an alternative so maybe they are.

Yeh, part IV is/ was being made I believe - although from having watched the third one I guess it will be some element of reboot rather than just taking off where that one leaves off.

    They are excellent.
    Krzysztof Kieślowski is the director.
Dekalog are brilliant but it is bit of a time commitment.

Not really a trilogy, but sort of:

    Sympathy for Mr Vengeance
    Oldboy
    Lady Vengeance

  • It's slightly edged out by the Resident Evil series.

They were my instinctual choice too but can they be considered ‘modern times’? They’re pre smartphone! Can any movie be of the modern age if it doesn’t include some electronic communications shenanigans?

Planet of the Apes? No, apart from the first one they’re the usual dreary American gun fest.

I'd say that's a strong contender for the most overrated.

  • My first thought was the Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) films. If you can handle the shaky camerawork. Although the first one came out 18 years ago......!
