Starting recording on home laptop from scratch

I need to record some guitar on my home laptop and do not have the first idea how to do this.

Is anyone able to advise an idiots guide to the simplest way of record some guitar onto a laptop? This might include any physical hardware and/or software I'm guessing.

You may need a interface. To play your guitar through computer though some pedals enable you to do this ie zoom gx. 
Download Reaper free. 
Look for amplitude free and addictive drums demo version downloads. 
Hopefully you will get the gist before you splash out. 
Watch the Kenny goia videos on Reaper. You will find lots of very good tutorials the first few should help you get started.
