Open G - where to start?

What's Hot

I fancy playing Crowes and Stones tunes in the correct way, so have tuned a guitar to open G, and found a few chords (I, IV, V, bVII) and badly played a bit of slide.

Are there any good resources for working out non major chords and a few riffs? Any songs that are good for learning open G?
Cheers.

"Brown Sugar" and "Start Me Up" from the Stone are Open G staples. I'd start there, and before long you'll pick up most of Keef's tricks.

The Crowes "Twice as Hard" is a good one as well, for a bit of slide.

There's a cracking tab out there for Smoke's Holy Ghost if you want to be lazy - I grabbed it when I thought I'd need it for something else. Can bung you a copy if you want. I think there's a rough open G tab for Brown Sugar in the special secret place, too. if not, there can be :)

  • Are you going to take off the E string or tune it D?
I found that the low D removed some of the rock 'n' roll and nearly went folk.

In the olden days when I only had one guitar I tuned the E up to slightly flat of G and it gave a slightly phasey character.

Try Honky Tonk Women from 'Love You Live'.  A great opening to a concert and I think really captures how good Keef is.

Thanks all. I’ve worked out Brown sugar as when I played it in standard tuning I mainly used the DGB strings (which translate to Open G directly).

Like a bit of blackberry Smoke, so will check that out as well. Pete can you add it to the google drive?

I need to get my head around chords based on the main one finger barre with added notes. Will need to work out smaller triad based chords to remove the major thirds I think.

Have left the low D for now but might go keef style later

  • Playing the Stones Wild Horses in open G will stretch you out of the Keef suspended thing.

  • The trick is to let the open notes ring out and allow the tonality of the tonic wash over the other chords.

Been doing the same thing and there are a couple of sites and chord charts around and plenty of tab
As said Brown Sugar and Star Me up are all good easy places to get some instant gratification.

Various links here to some basic chord shapes.

I just quiet like fiddling around and finding different tones and shapes for song writing.

Definitely leave off the low D string to start with, I downloaded a 5 string banjo chart to help finding some alternate chord fingering, good luck in your quest

Tumbling Dice is another good one to try. Some nice single string moves and the occasional Minor chord.

Shakin Hands added. It's from this chap here who has a video tutorial as well. Note that it will also be good for your hybrid picking if you do it properly, but you can bodge it (especially with two guitars!).

Alan Sparhawk from the band Low (and Retribution Gospel Choir for “heavier” stuff) has played exclusively in open G for his entire career. Check out his stuff for ideas on chord voicings etc...

I can't be satisfied by Muddy Waters is a handy simple tune to help you figure out where things are in relation to each other in open G.
