I've been on a voyage of discovery on this subject for years. First up was my JMP-1 pre-amp which worked quite well for a few years. Then a Rocktron Prophesy which I had some success with. In this video my son is using a JMP-1 and I'm using the Prophesy.
I think the JMP-1 sounds much more alive. Then came the Axe-FX Standard which was a quantum leap, followed by my current AX8. Although all of these were/are a solution, the most realistic sound (and importantly feel) I ever got was using my Bogner Shiva head through a Two Notes rack version with dummy load (no cab), this absolutely nailed it...no video evidence though I'm afraid.
