SOLD High End 2204 Jose Mod Build

What's Hot

Up for sale is my 2204 high gain Jose mod built by TGP/Rig-Talk/SevenString member FourT6and2, who has made a few of these, all to the highest standard. His dedication and attention to details shows in the pictures below. The amp started with an empty Ceriatone chassis and Chupacabra turret board. Mike spared no expense in choosing high quality parts to fill it with:
  • Custom power and output transformers by Marstran. JTM45 1202-55 PT and JMP50 784-139 OT.
  • F&T filter caps.
  • IC MPW signal caps, with NOS Vishay/ERO MKT1813 cathode bypass caps
  • High quality, low-noise, non-inductive Beyschlag MBE0414 thin-film resistors. 1 watt, 500v, 1%.
  • Vishay 1-watt, 500v, 1% metal film resistors in bias supply.
  • Mix of high-quality NOS caps in tone stack, PI, Presence, Depth, and voltage divider.
  • All hook-up wire is silver-plated PTFE and ETFE, rated at 600v.
  • Alpha pots.
  • Genuine UK Cliff jacks.
  • Shielded coax used in key places to reduce noise.

There are some tweaks to the stock Chupacabra circuit, as follows:
  • Input: 1M/33K
  • First gain stage: 2K7/0.68uF, 0.0022uF coupler, 330k plate load
  • Second gain stage: 2K7/0.68uF, 0.022uF coupler, 100K plate load
  • Third gain stage: 820R/0.68uF
  • Gain 1: 68K/68K voltage divider "Feel" control (bright switch deactivated, not connected)
  • Gain 2: 4700pF bright cap and 500pF bright cap on three-way switch
  • Presence: 0.1uF
  • Depth: 2200pF
  • No "Pussy Trimmer". Instead, typical Marshall voltage divider.
  • Tone stack: 33K/470K
  • Jose master volume with clipping diodes on three-way: 1N4746 on one side and MPSA06 on the other.
  • Passive insert FX loop
  • PI: 0.047uF caps, 120K grid leak
  • NFB: 47K/8ohm
  • Regulated DC heaters on V1/V2
  • Dual bias control
Ok, so what does all of this mean? It means it's similar to many of the other Jose-style high gain 2204 mods out there. Just voiced a little differently. Depth control isn't as deep or boomy. It's shifted up a bit higher into the sub-low mids and more punchy and vocal. Amp is tighter and has more grunt than some of the other monster-named offerings on the market. The Feel control on Gain 1 is a push-pull and when pushed = full gain and low-end response. Pulled = tighter with more snarl and aggression. Tone stack is closer to stock Marshall so it has more of that "kerrrrrannggg" that people love instead of a scooped fizzy mess. Phase inverter passes more low-end than stock Marshall. So it has a deeper, more lush timbre. The buyer will also receive the updated schematic for further tweaking if desired.

Mind you, this is not only a high gain beast, but also produces the sweetest jangliest clean tones with the diode clipping and bright switches disengaged. It easily covers the entire JTM45-JCM800-modded Marshall territory, while being completely quiet when idle.

Looking for £1150 ONO. No trades please, as I am looking to make some space in my music room.

That build looks the equal of a hiwatt amp...... spectacular. Makes me happy seeing amps as well made as this one. Youtuber Tony McKenzie took a look inside a £2700 Suhr pt15 IR head and I am flabbergasted to tell you, PCB mounted pre and power tubes on a £2700 head , not chassis mounted like they should be as shown here. Good luck with sale mate, I am sure that amp is a beauty.

The Suhr PT15 IR has a lifetime warranty, not many amps come with that so it's shows the faith he has in the product. I thought personally it looked really well made inside. PCB amps are every bit as good as any point to point, tag board, type amp as long as they're designed properly from the start. Most if not all of Suhrs amps are PCB but are still handwired. At 15watts output, I'm not sure board mounted valves are really an issue either. JS seems to think not.

Sorry for the thread hijack, that's a great amp you're selling hence why I clicked! GLWTS!

My head said brake, but my heart cried never.

Thanks for your kind words folks. I don't have any recording of _this_ amp, but here is a clip of another of Mike's builds that is 95% similar - exact same circuit with slightly different component values. The amp in the clip below uses fixed values for the bright cap and Zenner diodes.

I could try to record something with my amp once the works in my music room are over, but I don't have high output pickups or downtuned guitars to make mine sound this mean.

Having had several amps like this, I can honestly say it has never been an issue for me. But then again I’m no specialist. I could try bending the bell case back into shape, but I have not bothered.
