Sad. One of my favourite bands. Left a great legacy of tunes.

I didn’t realise that he wrote Golden Brown, my all time favourite song. Got it as my ringtone.

Damn.  That is crappy news.  Rediscovered the Black And White LP recently, so have been playing a lot of Stranglers around the house.  A truly great singles band (I'm even fond of the later stuff like Skin Deep and Always The Sun) and Dave was such a huge part of their sound.

    RIP

Damn, that's horrible news. I enjoyed his work with The Stranglers and also the Fire And Water LP he made with JJ.

    RIP.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.

Oh dear ... someone's been drinking in commiseration before using the keyboard.

Anyway, they made some great records, did The Strangers ;)

Amazing band back in the day. RIP Dave.

I just read that his original influences were Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman. Who'd have thought!

I remember hearing the opening keyboard in No More Heroes for the first time and it grabbing my attention as being like nothing I'd heard before.  RIP Mr Greenfield.
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

Very sad news indeed. Dave Greenfield was so fundamental to the Stranglers sound. Only got to see them live once, back in the early 80s, but it ranks as one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

Although I was never a huge fan of the band - I've only got the greatest hits album - Golden Brown is one of my all-time favourite songs too.

    RIP :(

    Saw them 74 times.

In 1982, I bunked off school and followed them around the UK to every show, and in doing so, I did a runner from 12 hotels. When I eventually went home, everytime I saw a police car I shat myself.

Nothing had the raw energy and darkness and tension of the Stranglers at their prime. The loudest, angriest band I have ever heard and consumately brilliant live.

Ali and I had planned to see them on the farewell tour.

JJ is last man standing as Jet has such heart issues he can only drum for 20 mins (and what a drummer).

One of the most original and unique bands of our lives and Greenfield was a fucking genius.

There was always this huge tension- Meninblack would come on, the band would fire into deafening action....and then Dave's keys would fail and there'd be a 5 min hiatus as his roadie came on, fiddled with a few wires and cursed.

Decent live vocal on that... pretty rare for TOTP.

    Sad news indeed.

The Stranglers were probably what started my interest in music that was..er.. left of centre.

I saw a video for Five Minutes on TOTP in’77....I was six or seven at the time and absolutely loved it.  It was a bit scary for a primary school kid, but still something sparked in me, and I couldn’t wait to tell the other kids about this amazing discovery.  But perhaps not surprisingly no one else was interested.

My mum was cool with it though, and bought me the single, which I sadly can’t find anymore.  I was dead lucky having parents who, although it might not have been entirely their cup of tea, were always happy to encourage me to develop my own taste.

    RIP Dave.

    Very sad news

In my old band, we covered loads of Stranglers tunes - and I had to play Dave's parts (and Hugh's leads) on guitar.... which caused some confused faces in the crowd. Here's one of my faves - and here's to you, Dave. (music starts at 0:45!)
