MJT P Bass Build

Following on from this thread  I have an MJT order on the go, so thought I'd give it its own thread.

Standard 4-string P bass template, sunburst (yeah boring...) on an alder body with a rosewood fretboard. I've gone quartersawn for the neck as I figure extra stiffness is never a bad thing.

I got these pics from MJT a couple of weeks ago, and I've just had notification the neck has finally arrived from Musikraft, so the whole thing should now be with me in the next 4-6 weeks or so.

Pickup will be Lollar and I'm going for flatwounds for maximum "old-school P bass". I just need to source a decent tortoiseshell scratchplate - I'm open to recommendations!

Lollar, great choice, love mine. 760FL's and your life will be complete  :)

I would chomp my molars down on that bullet and go Spitfire... it'll hurt but at least the resale is good.

Spitfire is definitely an option. Maybe if my bonus doesn’t get cancelled by COVID...

Scratchplate is here. Nice bit of tort off a random reverb shop. Not quite as nice as Spitfire or my 60’s JM one but about 25% the price and way nicer than most others I’ve seen available.

I went on holiday, so I had to wait. This morning I finally got a tracking number. It'll be here by the weekend with any luck...

And parts inside. Body looks fantastic and is a very nice light piece of alder.

I got MJT to send me a black guard to give me options with the tort one I already bought. I’m sure many would say it’s a super-dull finish choice but the intent is to get a single bass that could fit in just about anywhere.

Neck has some rough edges where the finish ends but I’ll be heavily rolling them anyway so no bother.

Where there is cardboard and packing peanuts, there are cats.

Great sunburst, lovely. Black guard might work... have you considered gold anodised? I once had it on a two-tone-ish sunburst rosewood neck P and it looked incredible.

Cheers - I did ask about gold anodised but they don’t supply them. This is actually a subtle 3-tone burst so looks great with both of these.

Neck on now, bridge next then I’m going to get to fettling the neck edges in front of the TV before I do any soldering :)

Quick mock-up. Scratch plate needs a little work to fit and to have the pickup covers fit properly, but that’s fairly normal.

It’s starting to look like a whole instrument!

Looking really good, nice and subtle with the right amount of class.

    Cheers- that’s the plan.

Proper photos when it’s done. Hopefully tonight...

Some chunky rolling to the fretboard this evening. Scraped edges with a Stanley blade then three grades of micro mesh to finish. Much improved over the stock square edges.

Initial fitting of all the hardware after wiring.

    Aaaand strings :)

First impressions are good. It’ll need a proper setup at the weekend once the neck has settled, but it’s currently playing quite nicely, so I reckon it’ll just need a bit of a tweak to the truss rod intonation.

And my name on the headstock, of course :)

Aaand the headstock is done. Rothko & Frost deliver again

It'll still need a bit of proper setup over the next few days but truss rod seems to be in roughy the right place and it sounds great. I may also borrow the thumbrest from my old Jazz as it feels like the right sort of vibe, though I don't see myself using it if it's in the usual place.

Full NBD after I've got the proper camera out.

Cheers chaps. My ears aren't remotely attuned to bass things, but it sounds really good as far as I'm concerned. And looks great, which is obviously very important :)
