I did some light chambering and added the back plate:

Needs to be trimmed to size and the binding channel cuts; I also cut the control cover - I think I have done a neat enough job to use the removed section as a matching backplate, which I always think is a nice touch.

Note to self: using a large forstner bit to chamber mahogany with a cheapo cordless drill is quite the task. My kingdom for a drill press.

Plenty of fobco stars on eBay !

    Looking good, as ever Matt

Cheers @PeteC, I've got my eye on a load of kit but at present I'm time rich / cash poor. Once this and the other one are built I'll post a pic of the power tools I used for both, it'll be a eye opener.

    Binding channel went well:

UNTIL! The bearing self destructed. It was an unused bit, too

Luckily it was on the last few centimetres of cutting! A narrow escape for sure, I'll be able to recover it no problem, its maybe a mm too deep for a short length at the heel.

All seems to fit nicely when offered up:

I had some tortoisehell binding in a drawer (don't we all) and after sending pics of both the guy who this is for opted for tort... which may mean a change of colour (I had assumed black for the body).

I was thinking that, plus I already have the paint. I may use your etsy tip for the scratchplate too, as yours looked great on the hollow LP build

Yes black with the tort will look very good. I’d vote for that

They do indeed Paul, and yours looks cracking. Did you make the scratchplate or order it from somewhere? I've got some tortoiseshell material on order...

Welp, almost done with this - we're both pleased with how it looks:

    Still to do:
    • make and fit scratchplate (I bought a really nice piece of tortoiseshell acrylic for this, but it is too brittle to cut with what I have here - even the finest jigsaw blade splinters it. Have ordered some normal material)
    • fit intended pickup when / if it turns up from Ukraine
    • string up, let it settle in, set up etc
You can't see the tortoiseshell binding in these shots, but its there and looks nice against the black. Will take better pics once its all done.

Thanks for looking! Onto the next build(s).....

Scratchplates are tricky to get right. I'm about 90% there, need to neaten up the treble side:

Need to do a final clean (noticed some white polish residue in these pics) and the scratchplate isn't as red as the pictures make out. There's a few things I'd do differently with the benefit of hindsight, but its all a learning curve.

Wouldn't you know it, I had wired up the placeholder pickup and this turned up from Ukraine:

Looking good Matt, how does it sound?

Thanks @JGTay , its a hard one to pigeonhole sound wise as its construction and spec is all over the place!

    25'' scale / 24 fret
    chambered mahogany body
    set cherry neck
    walnut fingerboard
Cheap (but decent) Wilkinson pickup (until the one above goes in which is wound hotter)
Currently strung with 11s at concert pitch while it all beds in (does anyone else do this?)

Its a bit of a cop out, but I'd say its more tele than anything else... I could say it sounds creamy / has pronounced lower mids / is harmonically rich / single notes jump off the fretboard / articulate etc etc... but I'm not that guy :D
