I wonder what the long term value of these "reissues" as Bill call them will be?

Given the many demands on my time these days,
    Ha!

Billy 2 Pedals and all the demands on his time.

Safe the say the hype is totally of his making now at that price.
My Trade Feedback Thread is here

Been uploading old tracks I recorded ages ago and hopefully some new noodles here.

Agreed, he's a bit of a marketing whizz. How to turn $20 of resistors in to $2,500.

"They take soo long to make"... I'm sure he's got 10's if not hundreds lined up in a row, ready to ship, when his "friend" who clearly needs some financial advice, has her next financial crisis.

Anyway, fair play to him. It needs to be a good product to start with to get the following, then you cash in, by slowing down supply and making out there are supply issues. I love it when amp and pedal builders make out components are in short supply and the new resistors just aren't as good as these 50 year old ones, that we only have a handful (never specific) of left. BTW, I appreciate with germanium resistors, builders need to buy a ton, to find the good ones.

I wonder how much you'd need to pay John Mayer to post an Instagram of your pedal on his pedalboard.... surely a good way to make money in this game. I wonder how much, this stuff goes on?

Anyway I fall for it all the time.

Still gooped. You'd think as the circuit is *so* well understood at this point he'd save the effort. But I guess it wouldn't be an authentic reissue...

Isn’t he selling them on behalf of a friend who has fallen on hard times or something? Can’t remember where I heard that, but if true, I’d don’t particularly mind him taking advantage of our unfortunate willingness to spend  money on stuff we don’t need

That was the last one? or the one before that.  Saw that story about 2 years ago.

He is either very charitable, or this friend really sucks at finances or he has a lot of really bad decision making friends to a point that they keep coming up to him for money.

To be fair, whilst he (un-necessarily) mentions making some for his friend to sell, he's not saying that's what's happening here. Just that he's making them in small numbers and hopes to continue to do so for years to come.

Fair play to him. Made one of the most iconic and most copied pedals ever and absolutely should be able to make some money from it. It's not like he's getting rich off them.

On one hand, free market, he can do what he wants, plus if its true, that’s also fine.

On the other hand, why the need for the story? If he wants to make a sell one even because he is bored, just do it, I am sure people will buy it. Is the charity thing a pre-text so he can sell it at market price, or one may call it inflated price. But without a story, if he is just making it on the regular then people will ask why he isn’t selling it at his original $400 price. It seems like he likes the value of what his pedals has become and he is cashing in on it, even for a friend. He has the power to make them a regular thing, say $800, double his old profit, and it would sell. He must also know that by doing so he would crash the used market for the old pedals from $2000 to $800 (or whatever he now sells it for). But then he would make a lot more money than a single £2k payment for his “friend”.

He has been doing these for a year or so. Though there were a few one offs before that as well, to raise money for a friend.

Isnt the klon KTR just the same circuit in a different box? *

*genuine question, I vaguely remember reading that somewhere, and that's why its got the script about "I didn't start this hype" on it.

the one question is who wants to pay 3 grands for a klon when you can get a perfect replica for an average of 200 quid?

Think you've misread it fella. He says he's made some previously for his friend, given them to her and she has sold them. This is his own listing selling for himself. It is a little bit 'I do a lot of work for charity but don't like to talk about it...' but don't see anything deliberately misleading.

If you've already got another full time job but have a unique position to make a product and sell it for great money then surely it'd be mad for him not to. Pretty sure he's not loaded and if he can make money from his legacy then fair enough. The used market ones aren't putting food on his table or paying his mortgage.

If you could make and auction 1 for $2k or build 5 and sell them for $400 each what would you (honestly) do yourself? 5 times the work for the same money and having to do it full time rather than as and when to fit in around your current life? I know what I'd do.

  • It's not a gun to the head type thing this, nobody is forcing anyone to do anything. Buy one or don't, surely it's a simple as that?

As I said, he can do what he wants, and if he wants to do it to get a new Rolex, go right ahead.  It just seems like a lot of pre-text.

Bottomline is, as a consumer, I don’t care WHY he is making it and WHY he is selling it. The seller sets a price, if it’s another random user selling his for $2k, nobody would bat an eyelid. As the original maker of the product, it is strange that he has or even felt needed to give a reason. Is it because without it people would ask “you are exploiting the market?”.

I think “totally” would be the answer.

    But if its for “charity”…

I think he has let the hype gone into his head.

On the face of it I don't think the guy is exploiting the market at all. He's put a $100 starting bid. The market is setting the price. He can (wishes to) only make so many, pretty simple supply/demand.
There are 4 competing bidders above U$1200, one is 0 feedback.

If that is account is shill then it's a problem. 100% bidding activity (two items) from the same seller.

I'd be building pretend used ones if I was in his position - just quietly let them out without all the fuss.
