Cleaning up mildew?

Our rehearsal dungeon is a bit on the damp side, so it probably wasn't a bright idea to leave kit there over lockdown.

A couple of cabs have developed a lovely patina of light grey splodges all over the tolex and in the parts of the grille that contact the baffle battens. 

I've tried all of the cleaners in the kitchen cupboard, but it's stubborn bloody stuff. Any tips on cleaning gloop that works? 

Fire is not an acceptable answer.

I've used this Dettol Mould & Mildew Remover to clean up old Tolex:


It does smell bleachy (chlorine) so might be worth testing on an inconspicuous area first.

Doesn't seem to have done much, but I can report that it stings like the mother of feck when you get it in your eye

Recently had some professional damp experts in to advise on house issues. Never heard someone talk so passionately and informatively about the varieties of mould species (!). He recommended HG Mould Spray  Great results. Back of a door that had a brown mould (I really should remember the species)  looks almost freshly painted again. Not tried it on tolex disclaimer tho.

I damped the tweed on my old blues deluxe with vodka (super cheap stuff from lidl etc). It kills the spores off, and then wipe off with a water dampened kitchen roll. I suggest doing it on a super hot day in the garden.

What was the vodka like afterwards?

Someone on another forum suggested car dash cleaner, and I've got some of that so I gave it a go. Initially it seemed to work, it certainly lifted a lot of gunk judging by the state of the paper towel. Unfortunately, as it dried the lurgy suddenly reappeared, like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction, only more shiny.

I had a Marshall that had been covered by a mouldy pvc cover  and the stench was terrible, no mould to clean off but the stench had permeated the speakers and cab. I sprayed it with a can of dry hair shampoo, left it out in sunlight and burned incense in it nightly until it just smelled of incense smoke

The 'organic' way to attack mould is White Vinegar. This would be suitable for all finished and cloth parts particularly.

I bought a gallon of this a year ago for three quid and it's brilliant.

White vinegar is great at shifting many unpleasant things

Hand held steam cleaner.  No chemicals and the heat kills the spores.
Something like this, good for other jobs around the home too.
