I've only heard of them in the last 12 months or so via Dan on TPS. I thought he couldn't be all that old, only 59 - gosh. Had Dystonia since 2008 which sounds like a very difficult thing to live with.

I don't know how many on here will be familiar with the work of Tim Smith and his band Cardiacs, but I have just read that he has died. I am a fan of the band and have often found myself mesmerized by the songwriting and composition of their material.

Sad news, wonderful band

Very sad news indeed albeit perhaps a blessed release from the torment of his illness in recent years. I saw the Cardiacs in the late 80s and they were an extraordinary spectacle. Quite disturbing as I recall and unlike any other band I have witnessed.  Tim Smith is one of those rare talents whose work never quite got the recognition it deserved. May he rest in peace.

RIP. Wrote amazing music. Taught himself to write notation and apparently scored all their stuff. And, by all accounts, a very good human.

I saw Cardiacs live more than any other band. My 'in' was some of their stuff being a bit Zappa-esque, and then I was totally hooked. Their music was always challenging, unexpected, intricate and it was a sight to behold a mosh-pit of fans dancing and twitching to every little nuance and all the really complex syncopated bits - everyone seemed to know the music in every tiny detail.

One of that lot was my brother. He and his college friend introduced me to Cardiacs’ music.
