MIDI to TRS Cable - Anybody make cables?

PC_DavePC_Dave Frets: 3396
I'm after a MIDI 5 Pin to TRS cable for a new pedal, however I'm struggling to find one for a reasonable price. Disaster Area make one, and it's only $15, however shipping outside the US is stupidly expensive. I have found some other stockists in Europe, but it comes to well over £30.

It's this https://www.disasterareaamps.com/shop/mj-5p-cable that I need.

Does anyone make anything like this? The only difference I would need would be a smaller/flatter MIDI connector (Like the Rockboard ones.)

Thanks!

Dave

Thanks @DanR - Assuming a 3.5 to 1/4 adapter works ok do you know?

I’m not sure but they are quick to respond to emails.

  • Best bet is to buy a moulded MIDI cable , chop one end and solder on a TRS jack.
Chop it in the middle and make two  ;-)

Search Amazon for 'midi right angle' - nice EBS, cheapo Snakebita and Hosa...

I just googled "MIDI to TRS" and loads of results came up, from cheapo moulded ones for less than a fiver to very decent quality ones.

The only thing you need to be wary of is which wires go to tip, ring and sleeve. I don't know if this is standardized (or indeed if it makes a difference). It might be worth checking with the manufacturer of whatever the TRS end is plugging in to.

Don't talk politics and don't throw stones. Your royal highnesses.

Be aware that some pedals need a certain voltage (or current I cant remember)  on the TRS jack that some MIDI ports cant provide. I think Chase Bliss were one of those pedals. Are you sure a straight MIDI to TRS cable will work for your application?

Some if the issue is covered in this thread - would be good to get a thefretboard expert to clarify what needs to be considered.

Thanks all for the ideas/recommendations. I've found a supplier based in France who sell the DisasterArea cable. Still had some Euros on my Revolut card so it hasn't cost me too much to order it from them. Fingers crossed it works!

Hello, I still don't get email notifications! Thanks H-Pickups (David!) for the tag! Yes I could have made one but no worries! I think I also charge about £25-30 for this exact cable in the initial link :-) using Van Damme, KMMK Square Plug (TRS) and Switchcraft Adjustable midi.

Sadly these cables are very difficult to get, probably not as difficult as my getting email notifications though 3 !!! I think I did the one with the 6.35mm KMMK Sq for a Meris Orbit and it worked first time.

Anyway, for anyone who ever wants one YES I can do it, I usually carry enough parts to be able to make at least one at a time. Right now I could do this or a 3.5mm to 5 pin midi. I mention this cause the wiring is exactly the same for the Boss 200 series pedals.

If you want to DIY yourself, probably looking at around £22.00 spend for parts and postage etc. I obviously get my bits in with other parts, if anyone ever needs the wiring diagram or for me to MAKE ONE! just drop me an email - one that will always exist is practicalpatch@gmail.com

Be careful with Strymon overdrives as their bespoke cables  use an optocoupler - not a simple midi pin to TRS assignment ..
