NGD - 1979 Martin HD28

So pleased with this purchase today from Glenn's Guitars. It's in fabulous shape and the tone is gorgeous.
Added bonus is the case with it's retro font and brown teddy bear lining - it could only be 1970s! I love it  <3 ;)

The experience of buying from Glenn was a real joy too. In a relaxed and chatty 3 hour session I got to demo 6 Martins (two not even on the website yet), 2 Santa Cruzs and 1 Collings. TBH, I would have been happy with virtually any of them although surprisingly the Collings was a bit of let down.
I very nearly walked away with a wonderful Santa Cruz D Pre-War, but in the end my heart, fingers and ears were with this lovely Martin HD28

What's the grain like on the back?

    It's a stunner for sure.

How does it compare to the 35 you were eying up?

    Wow. That's incredible.

The EIRW Martin was using in the 70's was out of this world.

I’ve bought from Glenn before and echo what you’ve said. Was a lovely experience. Enjoy the new guitar!

Really nice. I love the rounded headstock corners, it gives a much more hand finished look compared to new factory Martins which are quite sharply cut.

    Sorry, missed this yesterday

Tonally it's on a par, if not better.
Condition - no competition, cosmetically it's much cleaner and it has no structural issues
Price - this was considerably cheaper

    Winner all round!

    Very good :).

And it really does show how overpriced that D-35 was...

This looks like a really nice example. The only thing I'm not keen on is the strap button on the heel - I never like them there, but at least it would be possible to fix it invisibly by replacing the heel cap, if it bothers you.

I've got a '71 D12-35 with back wood very like that. A lot of people say that 70s Martins are a bad period for them, but I think it's just like Gibson and Fender - there are still great examples as well as less good ones, you just have to look for them.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

    Lovely, congratulations.

Glenn's is the perfect guitar "shop". I might turn down half the offers of cups of tea next time though. 5 would have been sufficient.

don't tend to use a strap much so I'll probably leave it there

yes, I read that somewhere too, but this one seems to contradict that

Lovely! I agree with your comments on the Collings - I’ve never played one I’ve liked - but loved every Santa Cruz I’ve tried.
