I bet Paul McCartney wishes he had written this song.

Made famous by George Harrison in 1987, but the original was sung by James Ray in 1962.

That's actually a cover as well.  The original was The Crickets (post Buddy Holly) in 1960:

Speaking of the Crickets... that reminded me that they did Real Wild Child before Iggy Pop, but even that isn't the original - this is. (Called The Wild One.)

I see your Bobby Fuller Four and raise you with The Crickets 1960 version

Recoded 3 months after Buddy Holly's death with Earl Sinks on vocals and Sonny Curtis (who wrote the song) on guitar:

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
The Roberta Flack recording is the most well known.
Original was written by Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger.

    Unchained Melody - Todd Duncan.
OK this one is cheating a bit, it was recorded for a film soundtrack not a single/album track.

They didn't actually write it either, but this is the first recorded version.

Billy Roberts in 1961 apparently ...

I do remember the song, but had no idea Denny Laine was the original.

I recall he once had a band called Denny Laine's Balls - don't think they got much radio play!
