Recommendations for exploring alternative tunings

What's Hot
Hey Fretboarders,

I'm keen to explore some more alternate tunings,  predominantly for fingerstyle acoustic playing.

Any recommendations for tutorial books/chord dictionaries based on your experiences?

Many thanks in advance :)

I used to use them a lot on acoustic. I would find a tuning then just noodle around trying to find things I liked. A favourite was BEBEBE. Just have a go, retune and see what you can get out of it.

Highly recommend Joni Mitchell Complete so far, dozens of great tunings and great songs!

In this book you get basically 40 years odd of research.

When I switched from standard to DADGAD I found the only thing that worked for me was to put all my guitars in the new tuning so that I was forced always to use it!

I like open G a lot -- DGDGBD.  It has the advantage of strings 2, 3 and 4 the same as standard tuning, which makes chords easy to find and everything resonates beautifully.

  • Big fan of Open G and Open D here.

I also enjoy CGDGBD fairly often. Basically Open G with a low C, so you can get a really beefy C major chord with an 002010 shape.
