Why are The La's even being mentioned?? Is this some sort of windup reaction prank thread?

You could say the same for muse, japan, rocky music, Dave Clark five etc etc.

    it’s all subjective.

In terms of contribution to music, I guess something like this.

    1. The Beatles
    2. Led Zeppelin
    3. Black Sabbath
    4. Rolling Stones
    5. The Who
    6. Pink Floyd
    7. Queen
    8. Radiohead
    9. Depeche Mode
    10. Sex Pistols

Disregarding any concept of 'contribution to music' `and just going with what I personally like:

    1. Porcupine Tree
    2. King Crimson
    3. Yes
    4. Led Zeppelin
    5. The Cure
    6. Pink Floyd
    7. Genesis
    8. Frost*
    9. Pineapple Thief
    10. Haken

‘Ere talking of ‘rocky’ music, if you lot don’t want a World Cup of British Bands, then the only way we’re going to settle this is with a punch up.

On that basis let's include AC/DC.  Most of the people who've ever been in the band were born in Scotland, England or Wales.

    Rod Stewart

    Status Quo

    Spice Girls

    Chris Rea

    The Animals

    Bay City Rollers

    Slade

It's too difficult to weigh up what I like against what's popular, what's "significant" etc.

But I wouldn't be too different from the 1970s-flavoured suggestions above.  Except I'd include Wishbone Ash.  Maybe Jethro Tull.

and Fairport Convention, Van Der Graff, Free and Pentangle. But apart from them its fine.

In no particular order except the first one.

    Led Zeppelin
    The Doors
    The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
    Wishbone Ash
    The Cure
    Steely Dan
    Deep Purple
    Linkin Park
    The Charlatans
    Red Hot Chilli Peppers

    Ian

Lowering my expectations has succeeded beyond my wildest dreams.

Not that I’m imposing rules but Rod and Chris aren’t actually bands.

If I dug out the Wikipedia list again Status Quo were on there somewhere, top 20 in terms of sales. I guess that’s a lot to do with longevity which isn’t something many of the bands have had.

I'd cheerfully add Slade even if just to try increase the number of people from the West Midlands on there ( ooh, ELO, UB40, The Wonderstuff...).

A lot of the usual suspects are going to appear over and over again, but in no particular order...

    The Beatles
    The Rolling Stones
    Pink Floyd
    Led Zeppelin
    Cream
    Black Sabbath
    Queen
    The Police
    The Who
    Free

Interestingly, Britain doesn’t seem to have produced a band of note for quite some time...

ELO did cross my mind, and presumably they were pretty successful too - but maybe that success was concentrated around the Out of the Blue period, not so much before and after?

If you want West Midlands you could chuck in Judas Priest too.

Just a smattering of non-Brits there I'm afraid, old boy.

My geography is a bit wobbly, but I’m reasonably sure a fair few of them aren’t British.

Glenn Tipton lives in Romsley so he’s somewhere about three or four miles from my house. Yet to bump into him at the pet store there.

Loads of West Mids bands - Wizzard, Steel Pulse, The Moody Blues ( took their name from a Birmingham brewery), Diamond Head, Magnum, Traffic, Duran Duran, one third of The Goodies - although I suppose lots of areas can claim bands.
