That's what I was under the impression would happen. But I'm not sure if it's because it was a pre-order online that it works differently?

Could be then.

I bought a new iPhone XR for my daughter last week with the trade in option, and they are going to refund the agreed trade in amount once they receive the old phone and check it over.  I hope they are anyway!

Good luck with your sale, a decent deal here for anyone in the market for Apple items.
