I've only recently discovered her and she's got a cracking voice.  I can't get her track Lay It Down out of my head currently.  Also a competent blues guitar player.

Any fans?

  • I don't mind her singing and playing but its not really my kind of genre. Her regular repertoire seems to include an interesting cover of War Pigs, which makes a change from the usual fare.

Yeah she’s fantastic. Keen to catch her live at the next opportunity.

Cool custom Delaney guitar in that video. They’ve just announced a Walter Trout signature (sadly Fender never made the offer).

I have a mate who is a big Samantha Fish can so I have heard of her from him and she is great. I probably prefer Joanne Shaw Taylor and Chantel McGregor both different. Channel's shed session on Facebook at 5pm Saturday's is great fun.
    Don't touch that dial.

Not a fan of war pigs, and personally I wasn't especially taken with her playing or her tone on that, which I found too grating.  But hey, we all like different things and YMMV.

  • Listened a bit to her last album Kill or be Kind. I haven't been much of a blues fan for a long time but recently I've been having the odd dip back into it.

The thing that most impressed me was the consistency of the song-writing.  It still runs up against the problem of being a somewhat worn-out genre (for me anyway) but within the limitations of that genre the vocal melodies are very strong.  Her playing impressed me less - she's obviously a good player but for me she's not in the Marcus King/Gary Clark Jr league of modern bluesers,

I was supposed to go see her earlier this year but covid got in the way.  She was supposed to open for Kenny Wayne Shepherd.  Both of them are acts that I like, though I probably prefer Joanne Shaw Taylor to both of them.  If you like her, check out Ally Venable:

  • Also, have a listen to Ana Popovic.

  • I used to be a big fan until she turned into Kyle Minogue, her early Blues stuff was great, had the choice to see her or JST on their last tours, we chose JST at Exeter Phoenix & it was dire. Friend of mine went up to Bristol to see Sam Fish on the same night and left before the start of the third number !!

The Tele type guitar with the fish style F holes fell apart IIRC so she doesn't use it these days.
I think she's generically good. She can sing well, play well, good slide player. I wouldn't knock her at all but outside of her name and the shortness of her skirts it's not very memorable or distinguished I guess.

I didn't really think that was anything special tbh (not that I could do any better). Faith no more is probably my favourite version.

  • Don’t get me wrong, she’s better in every way than me, but I found it awfully bland. Most modern blues (of which this is drearily typical) just has no edge and nothing to say...
