Tom Murphy goldtop (Shotgun edition)

What's Hot
Just saw this come up on reverb, Probably the most relic'd guitar by Tom Murphy I've ever seen - looks like he's used this for target practice....

Looking at that makes my hair stand up...I want to take an orbits sander to it and smooth out all those holes.

Unfortunately we had a minor spider breakout in our kitchen the other week, spider crud everywhere. If I had left a goldtop les paul in there overnight it would have looked exactly like this. I wouldn't have charged you 11k for the privilege either

Reminds me of the beams in my mums old farmhouse that have been riddled with woodworm.

Now. I will admit to not having handled a huge amount of vintage guitars. But like most of us I spend a good percentage of my time looking at pictures and watching videos of said vintage instruments.

I have never seen a vintage guitar that in any way exhibited this type of wear. £11k?! No chance.

My beams are 17th century & are in considerably better nick than that.
Looks like a Dan Brown book in braille...

I've also never seen anything like that, but I'm thinking, maybe they've done all the "normal" stuff forever and now they're exploring specialist situations relicing?

I had a chat with Tom at a guitar show about 15 years ago and he'd already been "the man" for years at that point.  But, he's the finish guy, not the bean counter guy.

The stupidity here for me is 12k.  If I was spending that much on a guitar it would be vintage.  For me Tom's involvement becomes irrelevant when figures like that are involved.

^ "The stupidity here for me"  is almost everything related to it apart from the shape & the original colour.

Reckon I are possibly mostly being a reactionary old bastard, but... it's a bag of shite.

I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

My point was, "specialist". Imagine some seriously successful rock star who had his prized LP trashed in that flood in er Nashville or wherever it was? They might want a playable version of whatever the original LP now looked like.

12k would seem to suggest that level :)

  • That is the shittest relic finish I’ve ever seen, I wouldn’t pay £500 for that.

OK. For the record, my feeling is more Eddie Murphy than Tom Murphy.

A lot of that “effect” is by using a dremel and a rubber wheel or grinding wheel. Compare the “pattern” the dremel makes to that of Relic Art Guitars (Easily found on Instagram) style and you’ll see how closely matched they are.

  • I love a good relic but that looks dreadful.  Woodworm city

  • I think they're going for a look... Which can be cool...

But that pattern is actually making my hair stand on end - it makes me feel weird. Does anyone else get that? It happened when I zoomed it to see what it looked like.
