‘Self isolating’ doesnt make sense to me.

The wording. Not the act.

Why does the word ‘self’ have a purpose in the sentence?
Is it supposed to clarify that I myself have put myself in isolation?

Only other meaning I can think of is that it could mean I am isolating by myself. But thats stupid because to be in isolation is to be alone, so the myself part is redundant.

I am isolating.
I am self isolating.

Means the same thing to me.
I’m not that smart so maybe it is beyond me?

At the moment it is annoying me as much as ‘pre drinks’..
Drinks previous to drinks, are just drinks ffs.
The only easy day, was yesterday...

I thought "pre drinks" was shorthand for "pre-dinner drinks" or "pre-theatre drinks"...

    With you on self-isolation though.

Ah see in that explanation it makes sense!

Its the younguns that use it to describe drinks before going to the pub.. for the main drinks lol!

I think it's about an expression of will.  "I'm isolating myself on purpose" rather than "I've been out in isolation".  Or, it's a non-word like "normalcy" that some "important" person uttered by chance and now we all have to go along with it.

"Social distancing" sounds like a bit of an oxymoron, too.  But in context, it's a way of modifying the nature of the socializing.

It means you're isolating by choice. So you're "self-isolating", whereas here in Wales we're "isolating".

Yep. Being in isolation is more like being sent to B Wing to a room with no windows.

There in Wales you're living under an oppressive Dictatorship..........just awful........a petty mentality governmentally terrorizing the population like rabbits caught in the headlights backed up by over zealous Heddlu who think that Corona Virus has licensed them as the New Stasi .
I would understand temporary restrictions affecting Cardiff or Swansea or any dense area where there were high infection rates but for a small Country where you can often drive for 15 minutes and see nothing but green valleys it's ridiculous .
The authorities have got confused between the human population and the White wooly-coated one on the hillsides.

I don't think we have "normalcy" in Britain .......we're still just normal thank goodness .
Unfortunately,we do now have people who are "Monetizing " things and many who are "Reaching Out " which I especially dislike..........If anybody "reaches out " to me I feel inclined to cut their arm off !

‘Myself’ is another word that fulfils no purpose whatsoever as far as I’m aware.

    I’d do it myself but...
    I myself think...

Remove the word ‘myself’ and the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change (apart from possibly sounding less self-important).

And as for people saying ‘question mark’ when they mean ‘question’...

There’s a question mark over the local library.   - No there isn’t.

The one that currently grates on me is beginning a conversation or, more often, a reply with ‘so’.

    Curmudgeonly rant over.

I think it's pretty clear, yes it's reflective, like self-harm or self-awareness. So you can self-isolate in groups.

LOL, I'm giving pointers on grammar while stuffing up my grammar. I meant, of course, reflexive. French O-level was so, so long ago...

I've just assumed it was chosen to imply a sense of voluntary "self-imposed" isolation, so people would feel better about having to do it. You're a noble hero taking one for the team if you self-isolate, whereas you're a dick that needs to be told if you're in isolation.

It also slightly downplays the potential severity of the reason you're doing it.

All just a bit more subtle messaging (although in this instance, on current evidence, I'd support it).

It’s to stop idiots driving from a high infection rate for 15 minutes and passing it on.
I'll get a round to buying a 'real' guitar one day.

I will stay off your lawn :-)

There is a purpose to reflexive verbs involving"self", but it's not well understood by American English speakers (not sure about England).  It's a very confusing part of learning Spanish, for example, which has a number of verbs with the reflexive "se" built in.

People just say "filler" words all the time.  It's annoying and I find it's best to just not talk to people in general.
