Came across as a gentle but fiercely principled, tenacious & smart man with a real sense of fun.

I don't have many heroes but James Randi was one.  

Why?  Because I grew up with a belief that scientists were smart and that science was the smartest of knowledge.

Randi showed me what's now bleedin' obvious:  that scientists are only experts in their field and that everyone is susceptible to being conned by their own cognitive biases.  Being a scientist is no protection from being conned.  Massive lesson.  Throw ideology into the mix and you are even further from the truth. 

A little con man who was one of the good guys.
