What Plugin to check for wav file distortion

So Im in Studio One...I have a vocal track sent to me which looks ok in the waveform, but sounds a little distorted to the ear... any clues what plugins can show this ?

  • For hard-clipping, no plugin required. You should be able to zoom into the waveform and see if the tops and bottoms have been cut off in a square like fashion.

The waveform looks ok, I mean its hot but not squared off, could it be that its been over compressed / limited when it was recorded?

Listen to it outside the DAW at unity gain. If it sounds distorted it is distorted, then maybe get it sent again without any processing. If it was over cooked on the way into their DAW then needs tracking again

Depending on how it was recorded it could be capsule distortion which is less common but possible, or the mic pre could have been too hot. It could also be saturation added afterwards or during tracking etc.
Personally I don’t mind a bit of hair on vocals and I sometimes run a parallel vocal distortion to blend underneath the main vocal to add some fatness to it.

I agree, but in this case it’s a bit of a power ballad....I’ll check how it was recorded originally..

Maybe run it through izotope RX declip and see if that cleans things up?
