Love him or hate him - what a player. And what a loss.

Greatest of all time? Very possibly.

Just heard the news - What a player - The Greatest ? - IMO no - Pele - Hard to fully evaluate - Pele was a great player in a great team, especially 1970 - Maradona had to almost carry the team and funnily enough it is something Messi has not been able to do for his country  - Maybe the hand of God goal still has a bearing on my thoughts about this, hence I'd still award the greatest to Pele - But nevertheless a sad day - RIP

I don't think Pele is eligible yet being very much alive.  They could perhaps go for Socrates as a Brazilian substitute (the footballer, not the Greek philosopher).

  • The greatest player of the modern era and if you get to watch the recent documentary you’ll be surprised he lasted to 60. Came from incredibly humble beginnings and was idolised from such a young age that it’s no surprise he couldn’t cope.
Probably the bravest player I’ve ever seen too - always wanted the ball even in games where he was getting no protection and seven shades of sh1t kicked out of him.

also a similar great goal in the 86 world cup v Belgium - His 2nd of the match - mesmerising run that started 30/40 yards out and went past 3/4 players

RIP.  Best of his generation, and I do like him more than Messi if for no other reason than his physicality and being just a force of nature on the pitch.  But he's not as good as Ronaldinho, though.
